Joining us as our guest expert is Jason Close, a key member of the team working behind the scenes of the successful Global Payments growth story. Global Payments literally doubled their revenue growth in a short period of time. Jason is here to share the story of how the sales excellence team supported sales leadership to make that happen. He has a unique approach to enabling the sales team to outpace the competition. Jason shares his story by answering questions from the How to Make Your Number in 2018 Workbook to share emerging best practices. Access the latest Workbook at http://sbi.tips/2018workbook to review the Sales Enablement phase starting on page 407 of the Sales Strategy section. Global Payments is a technology-driven company serving business owners and the leader in merchant credit card processing. Jason will demonstrate how to drive revenue per sales head up and time to productivity for new sales hires down. Why this topic? Getting an increase in sales head count is difficult. The expense cops expect all the current sales reps to be at quota before they agree to add any new heads. And when new sales people are hired there is little patience from the executive team members, who want each to generate revenue as quickly as possible. The sales enablement function exists to onboard new sales hires and to drive revenue per sales head up. Neglect sales enablement and forgo adding head count in the future. Jason is uniquely qualified to speak on this topic as the sales enablement leader for a highly successful growth company. Listen as Jason demonstrates how to drive revenue per sales head up and time to productivity for new sales hires down. (1:03) In the first segment of the show, Jason describes the business outcomes he strives to accomplish with sales enablement. He then ladders this down to the strategic focus areas of the sales enablement team to accomplish the business outcomes. And to give you context, Jason describes his sales enablement team and the relationship with the overall sales force. Jason shares below: (11:20) In the next segment of the show, Jason describes how he leverages a custom sales process to help his sales team win more deals, faster, and at a higher close rate. (21:52) Jason summarizes the show by sharing his onboarding program. Listen as Jason describes how he takes a brand-new rep and brings them to full productivity. You will want to take notes as professional sales development programs are discussed, including the content required to enable the sales team. I've been asked many times if I ever use organic and natural make-up brands in my kit. As much as i would love to use all organic make-up I find that the range of colours in these brands is often too limiting for professional work (particularly in terms of foundation shades and textures). Due to the fact that many of the chemical ingredients and silicones are omitted there will always be certain textures and pigment types which they cannot achieve. However, the market for these ranges is growing and they are improving all the time in terms of their formulations and colour palettes. I've included my current favourite natural brands Lavera, one of the best out there, along with well established Dr Hauschka. These are brands I have used personally for years. I havent touched on the subject of animal testing (suffice to say all the brands mentioned have animal welfare high on their list), as its such a huge subject. Working in the industry I know more about this than most but its not something i can cover and do justice to in a short video. Ditto the use of silicone in cosmetics. I did include all my thoughts on silicone in this video but it was 25 minutes long! I don't have a problem with silicone myself, its worked its way through the medical industry for years before making it into cosmetics but its up to you to make your mind up for yourself. The look i'm creating is very simple and untechnical as I wanted to focus more on the textures and feel of using these products. Basically, there's a certain point at which higher tax rates actually reduce the amount of revenue the government collects. What's that point? When are tax rates too high? This concept is named after the man who developed it, Arthur Laffer, a major American economist who has taught at the University of Chicago, University of Southern California, and elsewhere. The Laffer Curve illustrates the two most important things we need to know about taxes: how much money the government can raise from taxes and at what level of taxation the government might start getting less, not more, revenue. The Laffer Curve is illustrated here by a two-dimensional graph. The horizontal line is the tax rate that the government chooses, and the vertical line is the revenue that the government receives from that tax rate. First, because zero times any number is zero, if the tax rate is zero, then the government receives zero revenue. Accordingly, zero-zero is our first point on the curve. Now suppose the government chooses a very small tax rate, say 1 percent. The government will then begin to receive some revenue from citizens. This means that another point on the curve must be something like this. Now suppose the government charges a 2 percent tax rate, then everyone would agree that it will receive even more revenue -- which means that another point on the graph must be something like this. And if the government keeps raising the rate, then revenue will continue to go up. at least when we’re in the low-tax-rate part of the graph. This means that if we fill in the curve, it has an upward slope -- at least when we’re in the low-tax-rate-part of the graph. Now suppose the government charges a 100% tax rate. If this happens, then no one would work. That is, why would anyone work when the government is going to take all the money that they make? And if no one works, the national income would be zero. This means that government revenue would be 100% of zero, or zero. This means that another point on the curve must be here. Now let’s complete the curve. When we do, we see that the curve must have a hump. That is, it could look like this, or this, or this, but it has to have a hump. This is simply because the revenue line has to go up in the low tax-rate part of the graph and has to start going down to reach the point we drew at the 100% tax rate. But if the curve slopes downward it implies something remarkable -- something that few of those who push for higher and higher taxes want to admit. It means that when tax rates are high, if you make them higher, you’ll actually bring in less revenue to the government. This has in fact occurred in practice. For instance, during the Great Depression, when Congress passed the Hawley-Smoot tariff bill, although the bill raised taxes on imported goods, the revenue that came from those taxes actually decreased. A more recent example occurred in the early 1980s. After President Reagan and Congress drastically reduced the tax rates on the rich, the tax revenue that came from the rich actually increased. http://careerfuel.net/?p=7970 When Julia Coffey returned to her home state of Massachusetts, she couldn't find a job. After some time on the job market, Julia started to think entrepreneurially and quit her job search, choosing instead to apply her previous work experience in mycology to building her own small business—Mycoterra Farm. While on the West Coast, Julia had spent four years working for Paul Stamets of Fungi Perfecti, a master mycologist. This experience emboldened her to begin organically growing mushrooms and selling them locally. Each week she quickly sold out at the farmers' market. In year two she quadrupled her business. Now in her third year, demand continues to outstrip her supply and requests are now coming in from restaurants and farmers' markets in Boston. Organic farming has been a hit! Julia's business, Mycoterra Farm, is expanding and hiring. What she thought would take eight years to achieve has happened in less than four. Julia and Mycoterra Farm are a small business success story—revenue positive, creating jobs and loving life in western Massachusetts! For a fascinating lesson in mycology, stay tuned at the end of her story! http://careerfuel.net/?p=5207 How are farming and white-collar work a lot alike, you may wonder? In either case, you can rent the space to make it happen. Matt Conver is part of a growing trend of young people who are leasing farmland from property owners, and he is reaping plenty of what he sows! In Matt's case, a combination of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) revenue and farmers market sales pay the bills to support his family, allowing his wife (a trained social worker) to stay home with the kids. If you live in an area with existing farmland or land that is suitable for farming, you will most likely need money to get started. BeginningFarmers.org is a great resource for loans and grants specific to farming. When you have things up and running, you may want to offer CSA shares to cover some of your initial expenses and this site (http://bit.ly/PIeSfk) will help get the word out to potential customers (also a great site to find a CSA in your area and support your local farmers!). And finally, a salute to America's farmers- yes indeed, "they're farmin' and they grow it" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48H7zOQrX3U)! You'll learn what "Free Cash Flow" (FCF) means, why it's such an important metric when analyzing and valuing companies. By http://breakingintowallstreet.com/ "Financial Modeling Training And Career Resources For Aspiring Investment Bankers" You'll also learn how to interpret positive vs. negative FCF, and what different numbers over time mean -- using a comparison between Wal-Mart, Amazon, and Salesforce as our example. Table of Contents: 0:54 What Free Cash Flow (FCF) is and Why It's Important 2:26 What Positive FCF Tells You, and What to Do With It 3:56 What Negative FCF Tells You, and What to Do With It 4:38 Why You Exclude Most Investing and Financing Activities in the FCF Calculation 7:55 How to Use and Interpret FCF When Analyzing Companies 11:58 Wal-Mart vs. Amazon vs. Salesforce: Free Cash Flow Across Sectors 19:33 Recap and Summary What is Free Cash Flow? Normally it's defined as Cash Flow from Operations minus Capital Expenditures. Tells you the company's DISCRETIONARY cash flow - after paying for expenses and working capital requirements like inventory and capital expenditures, how much cash flow can it put to use for other purposes? If the company generates a lot of Free Cash Flow, it has many options: hire more employees, spend more on working capital, invest in CapEx, invest in other securities, repay debt, issue dividends or repurchase shares, or even acquire other companies. If FCF is negative, you need to dig in and see if it's a one-time issue or recurring problem, and then figure out why: Are sales declining? Are expenses too high? Is the company spending too much on CapEx? If FCF is consistently negative, the company might have to raise debt or equity eventually, or it might have to restructure itself or cut costs in some other way. Why Do You Exclude Most Investing and Financing Activities Other Than CapEx? Because all other activities are, for the most part, "optional" and non-recurring. A normal company does not NEED to buy stocks or issue dividends or repurchase shares... those are all optional uses of cash. All it NEEDS to do to keep its business running is sell products to customers, pay for expenses, and keep investing in longer-term assets such as buildings and equipment (PP&E). Debt repayment and interest expense are "borderline" because some variations of Free Cash Flow will include them, others will exclude them, and some will include interest expense but not debt principal repayment. How Do You Use Free Cash Flow? It's used in a DCF (or at least, a variation of it) to value a company; it's also used in a leveraged buyout (LBO) model to determine how much debt a company can repay. And you can calculate it on a standalone basis for use when comparing different companies. The key is to DIG IN and see why Free Cash Flow is changing the way it is - Organic sales growth? Artificial cost-cutting? Accounting gimmicks? Different working capital policies? IDEALLY, FCF will be increasing because of higher units sales and/or higher market share, and/or higher margins due to economies of scale. Less Good: FCF is growing due to cost-cutting, CapEx slashing, or FCF is growing in spite of falling sales and profits... because of a company playing games with Working Capital, non-core activities, or CapEx spending. Wal-Mart vs. Amazon vs. Salesforce Comparison Main takeaway here is that Wal-Mart's FCF is all over the place, but Cash Flow from Operations is MOSTLY growing, so that appears to be driven by the also growing organic sales. The company is doing some odd things with CapEx and Working Capital, which led to fluctuations in FCF - not exactly "bad" or "good," just neutral and requires more research. With Amazon, they've increased CapEx spending massively in the past 2 years so that has pushed down CapEx. CFO is growing, driven by organic revenue growth (no "games" with Working Capital), but it's very difficult to assess whether all that CapEx spending will pay off in the long-term. With Salesforce, FCF is definitely growing organically (Revenue growth leads directly to CFO growth, and CapEx varies a bit but not as much as with Amazon), but the company is also spending a ton on acquisitions... will it continue? If CapEx as a % of revenue stays low, it will most likely continue to spend on acquisitions - unlikely to issue dividends, repurchase shares, etc. since it's a growth company. It's been four and a half years; it's about time I finish this juggernaut of a trilogy that's been a ball and chain on my ankle for so long. ^^' If you're wondering what my next project is, let's just say it's a little present for my own special someone. (Seriously, you guys are so awesome. Thanks a bunch!) EDITS —————————————————————————————————————— January 15, 2016: I don't know who'll actually see this, but thank you so much for 10k views! That is such a crazy number! And heck, hopefully we can make it even crazier and get Mario's Switch Calamity to 100k, too! January 24, 2017: WHERE WHAT HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?! Seriously, you guys, how in the world did this reach 100k views in, like, just a couple days? I literally mentioned less than ten days ago that I hoped we could reach this goal...I didn't expect it to come so soon. XD So, like, THANK YOU! I'm so flippin' happy right now. :D February 11, 2017: Do you have any idea how massive half a million is? I've got a vague one, but in my mind it's still GIGANTIC. And that's why I'm so blown away by the fact that this has reached 500k views already! In a matter of weeks, the viewership of this one video alone has increased 50-fold! That's a lot of folds! XD Seriously, I cannot thank you all enough. :) March 4, 2017: I know not everyone will agree with this decision, but last week I was approached by a London-based company called Untitled that offered to help me earn ad revenue on this video. I know the name alone sounds sketchy, but I did some searching and confirmed that they are a legitimate organization with a flexible service. So, after a handful of days talking with one of the representatives, I finalized the deal with Untitled today; ads will now appear at the beginning of the video (in skippable form as well as those little boxes down below). Like I said, it's not really a popular decision by the audience's standpoint, but I'm nearing my last year of high school and need to start saving up for college. Student loans are absolutely insane, so I'm going to do everything I can to help myself for the future. You'll just have to trust me, but I promise that this is all I will be putting my ad revenue towards. Thanks for all your immense support before, now, and (hopefully) in the future as well. :) March 14: HOOOOOOLY 1,000,000 VIEWS! Thank you, thank you, THANK you! This is legit a dream come true for me, I didn't think for a moment that over a million people would eventually get to see my stuff! I am just...man, I feel so fortunate! You guys are the best!!! I wish I could fully express how much this means to me, but...lol, this is just an edit. ^^'
